Living with HIV requires consistent medical care, and one area that is often overlooked is eye health. HIV weakens the immune system, making it easier for infections and complications to develop in different parts of the body, including the eyes. Understanding these risks helps in early detection and better management.
One major danger is cytomegalovirus retinitis (CMV retinitis). This is a serious viral infection that attacks the retina, the part of the eye responsible for vision. If not treated quickly, CMV retinitis can cause blurry vision, dark spots, or even permanent blindness. It mostly affects people with very low immunity, making regular eye checkups essential.
Another common problem is HIV-related dry eyes. When the immune system is weak, the body may not produce enough tears to keep the eyes moist. This results in irritation, redness, and a constant gritty feeling. Dry eyes may seem minor, but when ignored, they can lead to corneal damage or infections. Simple treatments like artificial tears and proper hydration can help protect the eyes.
A third threat is optic neuropathy, a condition where the optic nerve becomes damaged. This may occur due to HIV itself or as a side effect of certain medications. Optic neuropathy causes reduced vision, eye pain, or difficulty distinguishing colours. Because the optic nerve is vital for sending visual information to the brain, any damage can lead to long-term vision problems.
For people living with HIV, protecting eye health is just as important as managing general health. Regular eye examinations, early treatment of infections, and consistent HIV medication can prevent many of these complications. Staying informed and alert to changes in vision ensures better outcomes and improved quality of life.
