The impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, on Tuesday, took to the streets of Lagos, drawing cheers from a large number of supporters.
The development comes just a day after security forces took over the state House of Assembly complex in a controversial manner.
Obasa, who was removed from office on January 13 over allegations of financial misappropriation, among others, appeared undeterred by his impeachment.
A video posted by Journalist Oseni Rufai shows him moving confidently, acknowledging cheers from supporters.
It can be recalled that on Monday, armed operatives from the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian Police stormed the Lagos State House of Assembly, in a move many saw the move as an attempt to reinstate Obasa. They took control of key areas of the complex, including the Speakerโs office and the Clerkโs office. Lawmakers, staff, and visitors were blocked from entering.
Despite the security blockade, members of the Assembly were later able to hold a session. During the sitting, lawmakers condemned what they described as an attack on democracy. They criticized the presence of security forces, questioning the motive behind the invasion.
In response to the Assembly takeover, the lawmakers unanimously passed a vote of confidence in the new Speaker, Mojisola Meranda. They reaffirmed their support for her leadership and condemned any external interference in the affairs of the legislative arm of government. Following this resolution, the House adjourned indefinitely.
