How governors are fueling insecurity

Governors across the 36 states of the country have been accused of being responsible for the growing insecurity, kidnappings and incessant killings in Nigeria.

This accusation was levelled against the governors by a lawmaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Isaac Agbo.

Agbo who spoke at a security summit in Makurdi, Benue state said the worsening insecurity in Nigeria is a result of governors’ failure to ensure the government at the local level gets the funds they need to tackle insecurity.

Agbor who represents Ohimini State Constituency alleged that governors are tightening their grip on finances earmarked for LGAs.

He said, “These governors get a lot of money, which does not trickle down to the local government areas. Governors are the problem. Let us tell ourselves the truth.”

He emphasised that the local government and its leadership are the closest to the people and when they are deliberately weakened, insecurity and disorderliness become the order of the day.

The lawmaker also urged the leadership of the Nigerian military to live up to its responsibility by nipping the security challenges in the bud.

“If what we are facing is a conventional war, let us confront it. The military needs to wake up and defend our communities,” Agbo said.
