Mrs Funmilayo Ransome Kuti, the mother of Fela Anikulapo Kuti, and the grandmother of Femi Kuti and Seun Kuti, is one of such women who have left an indelible mark in the sands of time.

Funmilayo was the first Nigerian woman to drive a car in Africa.

She was a teacher, women’s rights activist, political campaigner and traditional aristocrat.

She was the only woman among the men that fought against colonial rule. She was the only woman in NCNC’s delegation to London in 1947 to negotiate for independence.

Funmilayo “sacked” the Alake of Egbaland in 1948. The Alake was famously driven into exile in 1948 by the Abeokuta womenfolk.

Before Funmilayo sacked the Alake, she said: “Alake, for a long time you have used your penis as a mark of authority that you are our husband.

“Today, we shall reverse the order and use our vaginas to play the role of a husband.”

She died at the age of 77 after being wounded in a military raid on family property.
