Primate Elijah Ayodele, the leader of the INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, has issued a strong warning to Nigerians about the state of the nation’s democracy. Speaking on Tuesday, Ayodele expressed deep concern that the country’s democracy could tear the nation apart if corrective measures are not taken. His remarks come amid growing frustrations with the country’s political system, which he believes is plagued by corruption, desperation, and hatred....READ ORIGINAL & FULL CONTENT FROM SOURCE | READ ORIGINAL & FULL CONTENT FROM SOURCE...
In a statement released by his media aide, Oluwatosin Osho, Ayodele described Nigeria’s democracy as fragile and deteriorating. “If we are not careful, democracy will tear us apart because so many things are faulty in our democracy, and nobody has ever sought reforms of our democracy,” Ayodele warned. He stressed that the constitution needs to be urgently reviewed if Nigeria is to survive as a unified and functional state.
According to the popular prophet, the country’s leadership has failed to address the underlying issues within its democratic framework. “Our constitution needs to be reviewed if we want Nigeria to survive because everyone just comes to do whatever they want. All is not well with our democracy,” Ayodele stated. He added that the nation’s democracy has become a source of division, economic instability, and psychological strain on the people.
Ayodele also highlighted the erosion of the rule of law in the country. “The rule of law is no longer respected in Nigeria’s democracy. It will divide Nigeria if care isn’t taken and throw the country into confusion,” he warned. He lamented that the sacrifices of Nigeria’s democracy fighters, such as MKO Abiola, Nnamdi Azikiwe, and others, have been forgotten by the current government.
Further criticizing the state of governance, Ayodele pointed out that many of the founding fathers of Nigerian democracy would be disheartened by the way their legacies are being handled. “We have forgotten Abiola, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Tafawa Balewa, Awolowo, Ken Saro-Wiwa, and those who fought for our democracy. They are all angry because democracy isn’t the way they wanted it. This is the bitter truth,” he said.
Turning his attention to the recent launch of a book by former military leader Ibrahim Babangida, Ayodele blasted Nigerians for celebrating the ex-ruler. Babangida’s recent comments about the annulled 1993 presidential election and his assertion that MKO Abiola was the rightful winner of that election have stirred public debate. “Babangida recently said MKO Abiola won the election he annulled, and we are praising such. Terror has become heroic in our democracy,” Ayodele remarked.
He criticized the public’s celebration of figures like Babangida, despite their controversial past. “He realized billions for a project that cannot add value to Nigeria’s democracy, but we are celebrating such today. We celebrate injustice, corruption, and division in our democracy. It’s too toxic for the unity of Nigeria,” Ayodele stated.
The prophet also expressed concern about the role of traditional rulers in Nigerian politics, accusing them of becoming political pawns rather than maintaining their traditional roles. “Even traditional rulers are now acting like state chairmen of political parties, running helter-skelter for candidates to win elections,” he said, reflecting on how political power has shifted the responsibilities of these leaders.
In his speech, Ayodele also emphasized the urgency of addressing the issues surrounding Nigeria’s democracy. He warned that the nation’s unity would be at risk by 2032 if the current trajectory continues. “By 2032, we will know if we will still remain in democracy or not. We need to be very careful with our democracy in Nigeria. It’s getting lightweight by the day. People who don’t love the country are in charge of our democracy,” he cautioned.
