The announcement was made on Thursday by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo, who inaugurated the committee on behalf of the governor.
The initiative seeks to restore the infrastructural integrity, aesthetic appeal, and town planning of the old Port Harcourt City, addressing years of decay. According to Dr. Danagogo, Governor Fubara is particularly concerned about the deteriorating state of the township and the gradual erosion of its town plan.
“The essence of this committee is to re-develop and renew the Port Harcourt Township, old GRA, Mile 1 Diobu, the waterfronts, and canals in these areas. Develop them into a beautiful and functional city,” he stated during the inauguration.
The committee, chaired by Dr. Tonte Davies, Administrator of the Greater Port Harcourt Development Authority, includes key stakeholders from both the public and private sectors, along with affected communities.
Xcellon Capital has been appointed as the Project Advisor, with participation from town planners and corporations operating in the area to ensure a comprehensive approach.
In his remarks, Dr. Davies expressed gratitude to Governor Fubara for the opportunity to lead the committee, pledging to fulfill the governor’s vision for a renewed and upgraded Port Harcourt Township. He acknowledged the critical need for infrastructural improvement in the area and assured that the committee would draw from its collective expertise to deliver on its mandate.
The redevelopment project will target key areas, including the old GRA, Mile 1 Diobu, and various waterfronts and canals, seeking to transform them into modern, well-planned urban spaces.
The government hopes that this effort will breathe new life into the historical township while incorporating local input and advice for a more inclusive outcome.
The committee has been urged to collaborate effectively and share ideas to ensure the successful transformation of the old Port Harcourt township and its surrounding areas.
