Muhammadu Buhari – “Defeat Boko Haram Within Months”

When he took office on May 29, 2015, President Buhari immediately vowed to crush Boko Haram swiftly, ordering the military to end the insurgency within three months. Yet by the time he left in 2023, the group had splintered, morphed, and continued to carry out deadly attacks across the northeast—despite some military gains and cooperation with neighbouring states.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu – “Renewed Hope” (Fuel Subsidy Removal)

On May 29, 2023, President Tinubu declared: “The fuel subsidy is gone.” His vow was framed as a necessary sacrifice to curb corruption and fund infrastructure. Instead, pump prices tripled almost overnight, inflation spiked, and the cost of living soared—leading to strikes, street protests, and a widespread feeling that “hope” had been replaced by hardship.

A decade on, average generation still hovers around 4,000 MW for 200 million people, and many homes and businesses run noisy generators to survive recurrent blackouts.

Adams Oshiomhole – “End Godfatherism”

Elected as a crusader against political “godfathers,” Governor Oshiomhole promised always to side with “the people.” Yet by 2020 he was publicly accused of defending the very patronage networks he once opposed, prompting his successor to highlight the about-face in Punch’s pages.

Rochas Okorocha – “Imo Will Become the Dubai of Africa”

Governor Okorocha dazzled voters in 2011 with talk of transforming Imo State into a “Dubai of Africa.” Instead, his legacy includes multi-million-naira statues to visiting foreign leaders like Jacob Zuma’s 520 million-naira monument while pensioners and civil servants went unpaid for months.
