Ahead of the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest scheduled for August 1 to 10, 2024, a group of residents in Sokoto State demonstrated peacefully on Wednesday to highlight their dire conditions.

The protest, captured in a video obtained by SaharaReporters, underscores the critical issues faced by the community.

“We found ourselves in a position that we cannot control,” a protester said, expressing frustration over the soaring prices of food and commodities, which have risen by over 100%.

“We are left hungry. A lot of people die of starvation,” he added, highlighting the severe impact on their daily lives.

The protesters voiced strong criticism of the government’s handling of security issues.

“In our area, Suktu Northeast, we are facing terrorism and kidnapping every day and every hour,” another protester noted.

They questioned why Nigerian soldiers and security forces had not effectively addressed these problems, urging for increased support from the federal government.

The demonstration also critiqued the performance of elected officials.

“Our House of Representative members, senators, governors, Chairman of Nigeria’s local government left us behind,” one speaker lamented, emphasising the disconnect between the government and the people.

The protestors reaffirmed their commitment to peaceful demonstration. “It isn’t democracy if we are denied our right of protest,” they stated.

“Justice is denied in Nigeria today. Politicians treat Nigerians like animals,” a protester remarked, calling for a return to effective governance and leadership.

Addressing local issues, they pointed out that “the road from Gwarenyo to Gwarao to Rimawa was blocked by kidnappers. We must live in Nigeria and do anything to bring unity.”
