Ruben Amorim explains why Mourinho, ETH, other Man Utd coaches after Ferguson failed

Amorim, who recently signed with the English giants, faces an uphill task in changing the fortunes of the club.

Manchester United has struggled to maintain their elite status since their last trophy in 2013. The 20-time English champions have seen a drastic decline despite appointing some of the best managers globally.

According to reports in England, as quoted by Daily Mail, Amorim said post-Ferguson coaches have failed because they have ‘lived in the shadow’ of the legendary manager rather than getting their team to ‘play with his spirit’.

The former Sporting CP boss has been tasked with improving the club’s performances, especially in the Premier League.

Manchester United hired Ruben Amorim as their new permanent coach, making him the sixth coach since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.

After his retirement, Ferguson handpicked David Moyes to replace him, but it didn’t go as expected. Moyes lasted 51 games before veteran tactician Louis van Gaal replaced him in 2014.

Van Gaal coached the team for two seasons but was fired shortly after winning the 2016 FA Cup and replaced by Jose Mourinho.

When Mourinho arrived at the club, he was considered one of the best coaches in the world. He spent two and a half seasons there before leaving in December 2018 after winning the League Cup and the Europa League, according to Transfermarkt.

Club legend Ole Gunnar replaced him and made an instant impact. Although he didn’t win any trophies, his side produced some memorable performances, including beating Manchester City a few times and winning the Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain.

Ralf Rangnick took charge in an interim capacity, but it was a rough spell. Erik ten Hag was hired in 2022 but was fired last month after winning the FA Cup and League Cup.
