On August 1, 2024, the Kano State Police Command announced the arrest of 269 individuals involved in violent activities during recent nationwide protests. The suspects were apprehended for their roles in destroying and looting government and public properties.

SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the police spokesperson, revealed that the arrested individuals were found with significant amounts of stolen goods, including 25-liter jerricans of vegetable oil, stationeries, and various foodstuffs. The police emphasized that these arrests were part of a broader effort to address the exploitation of protests for criminal activities.

The Kano State Commissioner of Police, CP Dogo, condemned the violent actions and the spreading of misinformation, asserting that such behaviors will not be tolerated. He reiterated the importance of adhering to the 24-hour curfew imposed by the state government, stressing that violations would be met with strict penalties.

The suspects are currently detained at the Command’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and will face legal charges after investigations are completed. The police continue to work proactively to prevent further violence and encourage residents to report any suspicious activities.
