The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Anambra State has clarified that Joshua Ikechukwu, the individual accused of killing an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) officer, Aminu Salisu, is not a medical doctor.

In a statement issued by Obiaeli Ifeanyi, NMA’s secretary for the Anambra chapter, the association refuted media reports suggesting Ikechukwu was affiliated with the medical profession or employed at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH). The hospital’s management had already discredited these claims.

The NMA emphasized that Ikechukwu, who deals in medical supplies and had been mistakenly addressed as a “doctor,” is not a member of the NMA or its Awka zone. The association condemned the misrepresentation, describing it as an attempt to tarnish the reputation of the medical profession.

The NMA called on media outlets and the EFCC to retract publications labeling Ikechukwu as a doctor, urging due diligence in reporting. They reaffirmed their commitment to professionalism and lawfulness, noting that Nigerian doctors uphold the noble standards of their field.

The incident occurred during an EFCC raid in Awka, where Salisu, an Assistant Superintendent, was fatally shot. Ikechukwu was later arrested, hiding in a neighbor’s ceiling.

The NMA expressed condolences to the EFCC and Salisu’s family, stressing the importance of preserving the integrity of the medical profession amidst the tragedy. Salisu’s remains have been transported to Sokoto State for burial.
