PDP Shuns Wike-Backed Congress, Sets Up South-South Caretaker Committee

The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed the report of a congress allegedly held in Calabar, Cross River State, by officials backed by Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike.

In response, the party has announced the formation of a South-South Zonal Caretaker Committee to oversee party affairs in the region.

The purported South-South Zonal Congress took place last month, despite a court order and the absence of four governors from the zone, who refused to participate. The PDP later refused to give credence to the said congress.

In a statement released on Friday by the National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) approved the formation of the caretaker committee to prevent a leadership vacuum as the tenure of the current zonal executives ends on March 9, 2025.

The statement explained that the decision of the NWC is to ensure the smooth running of the party’s affairs in the South-South Zone and to prevent any disruption. The newly appointed South-South Zonal Caretaker Committee will manage the party’s affairs for three months or until a new zonal executive is elected.

The committee members include Bro. Emma Ogidi as Chairman, Hon. Nicholas Ayuwa, Barr. Godwin Akpan Udonta, Mrs. Bekewei Ashanti, Idehen Ebomoyi, Dame Vivian Ahanmisi, and Chief Damiete Herbert-Miller as Secretary.
