Arsenal kept their faultless run in this season’s UEFA Champions League alive with a confident 3-0 win over Slavia Prague on Tuesday night, matching a long-standing club record of eight straight clean sheets.
The Gunners controlled the game after a shaky opening spell, with Bukayo Saka scoring from the penalty spot before Mikel Merino netted twice in the second half. But the Champions League night’s biggest headline belonged to 15-year-old Max Dowman, who made history as the youngest player ever to feature in the competition.
Mikel Merino celebrates his Champions League goal with his Arsenal teammates.
Saka had already looked sharp before converting from the spot, forcing two saves from Slavia’s Jakub Markovic before breaking the deadlock following a handball decision.
Merino, standing in for injured striker Viktor Gyokeres, made it 2-0 just after the break when he volleyed in Leandro Trossard’s cross. He struck again midway through the half after Markovic failed to claim Declan Rice’s delivery.
Van de Ven’s Redemption Inspires Tottenham
Across London, Tottenham produced a ruthless attacking display to crush Copenhagen 4-0. Defender Micky van de Ven, who was in the headlines for the wrong reasons last weekend, stole the show with a breathtaking solo goal that covered more than half the pitch.
The Dutchman and teammate Djed Spence had been forced to apologise to boss Thomas Frank for ignoring his request to applaud fans after Saturday’s defeat to Chelsea. But Van de Ven repaid his manager’s faith with one of the goals of the season, capping a night of redemption.
Brennan Johnson and Wilson Odobert had already put Spurs two up before Van de Ven’s stunner. Joao Palhinha sealed the result late on after Johnson was sent off following a VAR review.
The victory, Tottenham’s second in six matches, lifted spirits at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where fans had been desperate to see a response after recent poor performances.
Liverpool End Madrid’s Perfect Record
At Anfield, Liverpool turned in a performance that could mark a turning point in their season, beating Real Madrid 1-0 to halt the Spaniards’ perfect Champions League record.
Alexis Mac Allister’s thumping header separated the sides, though Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois kept the score respectable with several superb saves.
Liverpool had struggled for form in recent weeks but looked far more assured under Arne Slot’s reshuffled setup. The Reds pressed aggressively, forced errors, and created numerous chances before finally breaching Courtois’ resistance on the hour mark.
Madrid, who had lost just twice in 20 games since Xabi Alonso took charge, were unusually subdued and failed to create clear opportunities until late on. The win brought Liverpool level with Madrid on nine points after four Champions League games.
Diaz at the Double as Bayern Beat PSG
In Paris, Bayern Munich showed no signs of slowing down as they defeated defending champions PSG 2-1 to extend their flawless start to the season. Luis Diaz struck twice in the first half before being sent off for a reckless tackle that forced Achraf Hakimi off injured.
Joao Neves pulled one back for PSG, but Bayern held firm despite playing the entire second half with ten men. The win means Vincent Kompany’s side have now won all 16 matches in all competitions this season, scoring 56 goals in total.
PSG’s night was made worse by injuries to both Hakimi and Ousmane Dembele. The French champions remain in a strong position for the knockout stage, but their growing list of injuries is a problem as the season wears on.
