“Why I converted to Islam” – Burna Boy shares his journey of faith

Afrobeats Grammy-winning artist Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, better known as Burna Boy, has opened up about his spiritual transformation and the personal journey that led him to embrace Islam.

Speaking during a Twitch live session with US streamer PlaqueBoyMax, the “Ye” crooner revealed that he recently converted to Islam after years of personal reflection and exploration. The 34-year-old singer explained that he was raised in a devout Christian home in Port Harcourt and practised Christianity because it was the faith of his parents.

“As I grew older, I started to study life and faith more deeply,” he said. “I was born into Christianity because that’s what my parents practised. But as I learned more, I found Islam — and with it, a sense of connection and peace.”

Burna Boy clarified that his decision was not an act of rebellion but a deliberate and heartfelt choice inspired by conviction rather than circumstance. “It came naturally to me,” he explained. “It wasn’t about rejecting anything; it was about finding something that felt right. I just felt peace.”

He added that his curiosity about faith continues to grow. “Even now, I’m still learning. The more I read, the more I realise how much I don’t know. But there’s peace in that — and that’s something I’ve been searching for my whole life,” he said.

The revelation has drawn mixed reactions from fans. While many have expressed support for his decision, others have questioned how his new faith will align with his outspoken public image and bold musical style. Still, Burna Boy’s conversion adds another dimension to his persona — one rooted in identity, growth, and self-discovery.
