Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has been left out of Cameroon’s squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
The 29-year-old, currently on loan at Trabzonspor in Turkey for the rest of the 2025/26 season, was not included in the 28-man list released by the Cameroon Football Federation (CFF) for the tournament, which kicks off on December 21, 2025.
Onana has made 10 league appearances for Trabzonspor this season, keeping three clean sheets and conceding 11 goals in the Turkish Super Lig.
He is not the only big name missing. The CFF also left out:
Vincent Aboubakar – captain and top scorer at AFCON 2023
André-Frank Zambo Anguissa – Napoli midfielder
Michael Ngadeu – experienced defender
Anguissa is currently injured, but the federation has not given any official explanation for the exclusion of the other senior players.
Coach Marc Brys Sacked on Squad Announcement Day
In a further twist, the CFF sacked head coach Marc Brys on the same day the AFCON squad was made public.
According to reports, the Belgian coach was accused of:
Encouraging senior players to challenge the federation’s authority
Skipping official meetings
Refusing to share training plans
Straining relationships with sponsors
Failing to submit squad lists on time
Brys has been replaced by his assistant, David Pagou, an experienced Cameroonian coach.
Fans Blame Eto’o and Slam “Politics”
The decision to drop Onana and Aboubakar has sparked outrage among many Cameroonian fans, who criticised the leadership of CFF president Samuel Eto’o.
Some supporters online accused the federation of:
Weakening the team by dropping two of its most experienced players
Allowing “politics and ego” to override football decisions
Creating chaos so close to a major tournament Others, while hurt by the absences, suggested that bold decisions like this might force a reset in the squad and ignite something new.
Despite the controversy, Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo has been included among Cameroon’s attacking options for AFCON 2025.
Onana’s Man United Future Still in Doubt
This AFCON omission comes amid ongoing uncertainty over Onana’s long-term future at Manchester United.
Reports in England suggest the club could move him on permanently next summer, after a difficult spell at Old Trafford and growing competition for the No.1 spot.
