Ogun govt boost aquaculture, registers over 5,000 fish farmers

The Ogun State Government has intensified efforts to grow the aquaculture sector, registering 5,068 fish farmers under the Ogun State Farmers Information Management System and providing free capacity-building for 4,362 farmers to strengthen productivity and access to finance.

Under the OGSTEP initiative, the state has also subsidised 195,436 bags of fish feed at 30 per cent, costing over ₦2.7 billion, to reduce production costs. In addition, five fish clusters have been established in Eriwe, Ikangba/Agoro, Ikenne, Ado-Odo, and Ilashe, all equipped with modern processing facilities.

The government explained that the clusters are designed to provide shared infrastructure such as cold rooms, blast freezers, smoking kilns, and processing plants to minimise post-harvest losses, improve product quality, and enhance market access for farmers.

The interventions, according to the state government, are aimed at cutting fish imports, boosting local production, creating jobs, and improving farmers’ livelihoods, as part of broader efforts to build a resilient and self-sufficient agricultural economy in Ogun State.
