Manchester United suffered their first defeat under Michael Carrick, when Newcastle United won 2-1 at St James’ Park.
Newcastle had an early threatening chance when Joelinton dispossessed Casemiro inside the United box, allowing Harvey Barnes to curl a shot just past the post.
It was an early warning to visitors that they could be punished at the counter.
Earlier in the first half, Bryan Mbeumo had a golden opportunity to put United ahead but failed to convert, much to the frustration of the fans.
In the 45th minute, Newcastle was reduced to 10 men after Jacob Ramsey received a second yellow card for simulation, giving United a numerical advantage heading into the second half.
Despite being down to 10 men, Newcastle broke the deadlock in the 44+4th minute after Bruno Fernandes fouled Gordon inside the box. The resulting penalty was calmly converted, giving the Magpies a 1-0 lead going into halftime.
United responded in the 45+8th minute when Casemiro finished expertly from a pinpoint cross by Fernandes, leveling the score at 1-1.
United came close to taking the lead again in the 75th minute when Yoro met another brilliant cross from Fernandes. However, Aaron Ramsdale made a crucial save to keep the score level.
The match was finally decided in the 90th minute as Will Osula struck a stunning goal, securing all three points for Newcastle and leaving United stunned.
With this result, Manchester United remain in 3rd place in the Premier League with 51 points, level on points with Aston Villa who sit 4th following their 4-1 defeat to Chelsea.
