Many everyday household items seem simple, yet most of us use them differently from how they were actually designed to work. Correcting these small mistakes can save time, improve hygiene, and even extend the life of your items. Here are 10 common things you might be using the wrong way without realizing it.
1. Toothpaste
Most people think toothpaste is mainly for whitening, but its real purpose is plaque removal, not bleaching. Using too much can even damage your enamel. A pea-sized amount is enough.
2. Wooden Cutting Boards
Many wash them with only water. But wooden boards hold bacteria easily. They should be scrubbed with salt and lemon, then properly dried never soaked in water.
3. Kettles
If you only rinse the kettle, limescale builds up inside. You should descale it monthly with vinegar or lemon water to keep it clean and heat water faster.
4. Kitchen Foil
Most packs have hidden side tabs that lock the roll in place. Many people don’t push them in, causing the foil roll to fall out every time you pull.
5. Microwave
Placing food in the center cooks it unevenly. Put your plate on the edge of the turntable so it rotates around the heat zone for better warming.
6. Washing Machine
Overloading doesn’t save time it reduces washing quality and damages the machine. Clothes need space to spin and absorb water properly.
7. Brooms
We sweep using only the middle of the broom, causing it to wear out quickly. Using the angled sides helps it last longer and picks up more dirt.
8. Shampoo
Pouring shampoo directly on your hair doesn’t clean effectively. You should lather it in your hands first before applying to your scalp.
9. Power Strips
Many people plug heavy appliances like irons or kettles into power strips. These draw too much electricity and can cause overheating. Use them only for low-watt devices.
10. Plastic Storage Containers
Storing oily food directly can cause stains. Rubbing the container with a little water before adding the food helps prevent this and makes washing easier.
