Spain’s Jordan Diaz triumphed with a jump of 17.86m, while Portugal’s Pedro Pichardo and Italy’s Andy Diaz took silver and bronze respectively.
However, the Brazillian enjoyed a moment to remember after the final when he got down on one knee to propose to his stunned partner trackside who duly said yes.
The pair then shared an embrace as the crowd cheered on the happy couple, with Dos Santos’ proposal making him the fifth athlete to have got engaged so far in Paris.
Earlier in the Games, the boyfriends of French sailors Sarah Steyaert and Charline Picon proposed to the pair after they won bronze in the skiff sailing.
Then, it was the turn of China’s Liu Yuchen who proposed to his girlfriend and teammate Huang Yaqiong after she won gold in the badminton mixed doubles final.
‘I told myself that if I ran under nine minutes, knowing that nine is my lucky number and that we’ve been together for nine years, then I would propose,’ Finot said, having crossed the line in eight minutes and 58.67seconds.
‘I don’t like doing things like everyone else. Since he hadn’t done it yet, I told myself that maybe it was up to me to do it.
‘So, I gave a pin that I ran with to my boyfriend. On it, it says: “Love is in Paris.”
‘He’s the one who always gives me strength and if I managed to get under nine minutes, that meant a lot.’
