FG Issues Circular to VCs on Protecting University Community During Planned Protests

The circular, distributed through the National Universities Commission (NUC) and signed by Acting Executive Secretary Dr. Chris Maiyaki on Monday, acknowledges the right to protest but raises concerns about potential violence.

Titled “Urgent Arrangements for the Security and Safety of University Staff, Students, and Property During the Proposed Nationwide Protests,” the circular follows a directive from the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman.

It states, “The Minister of Education has instructed Vice Chancellors to be aware of plans by certain groups to stage nationwide protests. While the right to peaceful protest is recognized, there are concerns regarding the safety of university staff, students, and property.

“Vice Chancellors are required to implement proactive measures to ensure the security of the university community. They should also provide specific assurances to staff and students regarding their safety.

“Students are advised to stay on campus to continue their studies and minimize exposure to potential risks during the protests.

“Please accept the Minister’s assurances of highest consideration and best wishes.”
