The Convener of the #RevolutionNow movement, Omoyele Sowore has asked the Inspector General of the Nigeria Police Force (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun to provide the details of officers deployed for the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest.
Sowore who made this known on Monday morning when he appeared on the Nigeria Info FM’s live broadcast said a letter of request had been prepared and would be submitted to the IG today (Monday).
He added that the IG is mandated to let Nigerians know the identities of police personnel who will be armed during the nationwide public demonstrations slated to hold between August 1 and 10, 2024.
Sowore said, “The IGP should make available the names of officers who are going to be deployed. All of them. They should provide their details. Their ranks. Let’s know who is going to be armed or unarmed among them because this is completely a civil affair.”
He continued: “There is no reason to collect the names of the organisers. If you want to collect the names of the organisers of this protest, you will need the capacity to collect over 200 million names. We have replied to him and our lawyers are going to communicate this to him (IG) this morning.”
Last week, Egbetokun asked Nigerians organising the planned nationwide #EndBadGovernance protest to submit their contact details and addresses to the police commissioners in their respective states before carrying out the protest.
While addressing journalists during a press briefing at the Force Headquarters on Friday, Egbetokun said the directive was necessary to ensure peaceful protests.
Egbetokun said, “We acknowledge the constitutional right of Nigerian citizens to peaceful assembly and protest.
“However, in the interest of public safety and order, we urge all groups planning to protest to provide necessary details to the Commissioner of Police in the state where the protest is intended to take place.
“To facilitate a successful and incident-free protest, they should please provide the following information:
“Stating the proposed protest routes and assembly points. 2. Expected duration of the protest. 3. Names and contact details of protest leaders and organisers.
“Measures to prevent hijacking by criminal elements, including key identifiers for possible isolation of potential troublemakers. By providing this information, the police will be enabled to deploy adequate personnel and resources to ensure public safety.
“Designate specific routes and areas for the protest to avoid conflicts with other events or activities. Establish clear communication channels with protest leaders to address any concerns or issues that may arise.’
