In a letter signed by its Director of Mobilisation, Damilare Adenola on Friday, July 26, 2024, the group wrote to the minister requesting the use of the facility for its protest, as well as the provision of security and utilities for the duration of the protest.
They also asked that the Minister “ensure the provision of a 24-hour power supply, toilet facilities, water, and security for the convenience of Nigerian citizens who will be camped out at Eagle Square”.
Wike, however, said the group had only applied via social media and television appearances, adding that they must apply properly, meet with him, and pay a security cost before such a request could be granted.
In response to the minister’s conditions, Damilare Adenola, the Director of Mobilisation of ‘Take It Back Movement’ vowed to carry on with the protest with or without the minister’s permission.
Speaking on Channels Television Sunday Politics, Adenola said, “The Eagle Square is a public property and when I saw the video of the Minister, I was amazed. I saw the minister asking us to pay rent, security fees. My question to the minister is, how does the minister expect Nigerian youths who are impoverished, unemployed, no jobs to afford the exorbitant amount he is requesting for us to pay.
“We are going to be at the Eagle Square August 1. We will speak to them and if they have the interest of the people, if they have the will to serve us, then they should be willing to provide that venue for us.”
The Nigerian youths are preparing to protest against bad governance, insecurity, inflation, high costs of living, etc. The protest will be held in all 36 states.
Nigerians upon hearing the comments made by Wike, believe there is a need for a protest against Wike.
