In a tweet from his verified Twitter account, Sani highlighted the contradiction in Nigerians’ expectations when it comes to competency in various professions versus political appointments.
“People want competent Pilot, Competent Doctor, Competent Engineer, Competent Teacher and Competent Driver… but on political appointment, they want from their tribes even if he or she is incompetent,” Sani wrote.
This statement from Sani comes amid growing public outcry accusing Tinubu of nepotism and tribalism in his recent political appointments. Critics argue that Tinubu has disproportionately appointed individuals from the southern region, particularly the Yoruba ethnic group, to key government positions. This has sparked a nationwide debate on the balance between merit and representation in political leadership.
Sani’s tweet emphasizes a broader issue in Nigeria’s political culture, where tribal loyalty often trumps meritocracy. His comments suggest that while Nigerians demand excellence in everyday services, they are willing to compromise on competence when it comes to political appointments, as long as the appointee belongs to their tribe.
