No fewer than three people have been killed as unidentified gunmen launched a fresh attack on Nyamgo Gyel, Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Naija News reports that the latest development, which comes barely three days after President Bola Tinubu visited Jos, has increased fears over the deteriorating security situation in the region.
The victims, identified as Luka Sandu Pam (36), Samuel Davou (38), and Deme Saidu (35), were reportedly ambushed while returning home from Gero on a motorbike.
The Gyel Youth Leader, Dung Davou, who spoke with Channels Television, said the victims were part of a group of about 15 youths returning from a mining site when they ran into the ambush.
Davou said the group came under sudden attack by suspected armed herdsmen, forcing them to flee for safety.
He further called on authorities to urgently address what he described as repeated and unprovoked attacks on the community.
He said, “We started hearing sporadic gunshots, and everyone scattered. Unfortunately, three of our people were killed.”
Recall that over 10 people were killed and several others injured after heavily armed gunmen laid siege on the Angwan Rukuba community in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State last Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, has opined that the recent deadly Jos massacre occurred because the security personnel were also caught off guard due to the relative peace the residents have enjoyed, particularly in the last 10 months to one year.
Naija News reports that Mutfwang, while speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, said the attackers studied the residents’ behaviour and mimicked the National Drug Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) operations to strike unexpectedly, leaving both citizens and security forces unprepared.
The governor described the incident as unfortunate and worrisome, but expressed confidence it would be a one-off event.
