Arsenal have been handed two major transfer updates, which could see Mikel Arteta and Edu sanction two deals this week. Talks over signing the Real Sociedad midfielder have taken place over the last few weeks, though Arsenal are yet to formally launch an offer. With his contract up in 2025, reaching an agreement in the region of £25million is the aim, and the chances of that happening have been given a huge boost thanks to a huge Sociedad decision.
Sealing outgoings will also be a priority, with more players likely to follow Emile Smith Rowe in sealing a permanent exit from Emirates Stadium. Eddie Nketiah was one that appeared primed for a move elsewhere, with Marseille strongly interested, though the French club have instead opted to sign Elye Wahi.
Though that decision suggests Nketiah will remain at the Gunners for the upcoming campaign, that may not be the case with a new club entering the race for his signature. With all of that being said, football.london has taken a look at the latest Arsenal transfer news and rumours.
Enormous Merino boost
Arsenal have been handed a major Mikel Merino transfer boost, with Martin Zubimendi confirming to Liverpool he will remain at Sociedad for the 2024/25 season. The Spain international, who has a £51million (€60m) release clause in his contract, had been identified as Arne Slot’s transfer priority, but his decision to reject the move plays into Arsenal’s hands.
Sociedad accepting the loss of two key midfielders appeared unthinkable, though not impossible. However, with Zubimendi now staying, the Gunners can take advantage by finally reaching an agreement for Merino.
football.london says: “Though reports suggested the two deals would not impact each other, it feels like a seismic Arsenal transfer boost for Arteta and Edu. This update does not mean Merino is guaranteed to join, but it certainly provides Sociedad with some security; they will not lose the spine of their team.
“Ideally, Arsenal will want to strike now in order to get the 28-year-old in the building before a deal becomes more complex as the summer window closing edges closer. Merino is also yet to partake in any pre-season friendlies for his current club, which may suggest preparations for life without him have already begun.”
New striker talks
With Marseille turning down Arsenal’s Nketiah terms, Bournemouth have added the striker to their shortlist of potential replacements for Dominic Solanke following his transfer to Tottenham.
According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, initial talks regarding a move have been held. Porto striker Evanilson appears to still be the priority target though, with the Cherries seeing an opening bid for his services rejected.
football.london says: “Despite the major transfer gamble, Arsenal could still yet receive the funds they want from an Nketiah departure. Selling to a Premier League rival, who are fresh off taking in a club-record transfer sale, could also see the asking price increase.
“With Nketiah having his heart set on Marseille, it remains to be seen if he would accept playing his football at the Vitality Stadium for the next few years. However, it would likely be guaranteed minutes and also the chance to work under another exciting manager in Andoni Iraola.
“Nonetheless, talks will likely continue, and it could honestly be a good move for Nketiah, especially if he wishes to continue playing in England.”
