In 2017, Kayla Hayes, then 17, was assaulted in Simpsonville, South Carolina, by her 21-year-old ex-boyfriend, Seth Aaron Fleury. The attack occurred after she ended their year-long relationship due to increasing abuse. When they met to talk weeks later, Fleury tried to kiss her. As she pulled away, he latched onto her lower lip with such force that he tore away 85% of it.

The brutal assault left Kayla with permanent injuries, both physical and emotional. She underwent emergency surgery, but doctors were unable to reattach her lip. The trauma led to scarring, impaired mouth movement, and a wave of psychological challenges, including anxiety, nightmares, and loss of self-esteem. At the time, she described feeling “completely mutilated.”

Fleury was later sentenced to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature. He is required to serve at least 85% of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole.

Seven years later, now 26, Kayla has transformed her pain into purpose. She recently shared a smiling photo on Instagram, her scars barely visible thanks to years of treatment and reconstruction, including lip and cheek fillers. She appeared radiant—her joy and confidence evident.

Supporters filled her comment section with love, calling her “beautiful,” “strong,” and “shining bright.” The woman once left in a puddle of blood by a man who claimed to love her now stands as a voice for others.

Kayla has since written a book titled She Rises, which details her journey of healing from teenage domestic violence and childhood sexual abuse. The memoir, which emphasizes the power of choosing to wear one’s scars like wings, received glowing reviews and won the Next Generation Indie Book Award in 2022.

She also runs a Facebook community, Rise Above, to help others recognize and escape abusive relationships. Her advocacy stems from a desire to ensure that others don’t experience what she did.

In a haunting victim impact statement shared during Fleury’s sentencing, Kayla recalled the aftermath of the attack: “Sitting in a puddle of my own blood with the majority of my lip on my leg, confused and terrified… I didn’t know how I could ever show my face again.”

She recounted feeling unable to call her mother, who was away on her first vacation without her daughter. Friends couldn’t understand her over the phone due to her injuries. “I wanted to give up,” she admitted. “But something in me kept going.”

The damage from the attack extended beyond her appearance. Kayla had to drop out of college, losing a dental hygiene scholarship and forcing her and her mother to sell their home to cover medical bills. For a long time, she avoided public places, covered her face with makeup, and was unable to eat normally due to her restricted jaw movement.

Even years later, the trauma lingered. She would wake at night to alerts that Fleury’s ankle monitor had gone off. Ambulance sirens triggered panic. “Every day is a struggle,” she wrote, “but if I sit down and let this defeat me, then he gets more satisfaction out of what he’s done.”

Despite everything, Kayla Hayes has not only survived—she has rebuilt. Her strength, resilience, and advocacy have inspired countless others. Her message is clear: “Even if my story only helps one person, then it was all worth it.”
