Fayose, the brother of former Ekiti State governor Ayo Fayose stated in a video on his Instagram page that individuals responsible for the lapses would have been killed if they were in China.

He described the individual responsible for maintaining the integrity of the dam as corrupt.

Isaac Fayose’s comment comes after the damage from the dam left at least 414,000 people displaced and another 30 killed.

According to the United Nations Human Rights Refugee Council and Maiduguri Metropolitan Council residents, the flood began after the Alau Dam overflowed following heavy rains, leading to the town’s worst flooding in 30 years.

NEMA spokesman Manzo Ezekiel told The PUNCH on Wednesday that the death toll had reached 30 and displaced close to half a million people.

“80 percent of Maiduguri is underwater, and the reason is that the civil servants who are supposed to maintain the dam are corrupt. If they were in China right now, half of the civil servants in charge of the dam would be on death row. They have killed so many people. In the Maiduguri prison, a lot of people have died. What a wicked situation,” Fayose said in the video.

According to NEMA, more than 23,000 households have been affected by the rapid rise of waters following the weekend rupture of the Alau dam on the Ngadda River, 20km south of Maiduguri.

Reports indicate that the water had receded as of Wednesday after 70 percent of Maiduguri was submerged by the fast-moving waters, according to NEMA, which ravaged major city locations, including the palace of the Shehu of Borno, Umar Ibn Garbai El-Kanemi; the state secretariat, post office, cemetery, and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.

The flood also washed away 80 percent of animals at the Sanda Kyarimi Park zoo and damaged houses, schools, as well as commercial and worship centers.
