While occasional rises in urinary frequency are natural, persistent or sudden long-term changes should not be neglected.
In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr Vikaram Barua, HOD & Consultant – Urologist, Manipal Hospital, Gurugram explained about overactive bladder in which a person frequently urinates.
Overactive Bladder
Overactive Bladder or OAB is not a single disease but rather a set of symptoms that affect urination. The major culprit is a sudden, urgent need to pee that is difficult to control. Sometimes this need causes involuntary urine leakage. Typically, in OAB, the muscles contract before the bladder is full. It is more frequent in women, particularly after menopause but it can affect anyone of any age. While there is no permanent cure, there are numerous successful methods for managing it and regaining control. According to the Urology Care Foundation, many older men (30%) and women (40%) struggle with OAB symptoms.

Many conditions can cause frequent urination including-
Urinary tract and pelvic infections
Diabetes
Pregnancy
Enlarged prostate
Carcinoma in situ of urinary bladder
Neurological disorders such as stroke, Parkinson’s disease
Stress and anxiety

Ultrasound of KUB region, Uroflowmetry And Bladder Scan
Urodynamic Testing- Various tests to assess bladder and urethral function, include bladder pressure measurement, to determine storage and emptying capacity.
Cystoscopy- A tiny tube with a camera is used to visually examine the bladder in order to find bladder anomalies or other probable causes of OAB.
Treatment Of Overactive Bladder
The cause of frequent urination determines the appropriate treatment. Some cases can be handled with lifestyle changes while others may necessitate drugs or medical treatments.
Lifestyle Changes- Avoid bladder irritants such as spicy meals, artificial sweeteners and acidic fruits to reduce OAB symptoms and discomfort. Limiting caffeine and alcohol intake, as well as drinking fluids in moderation, can support. Maintaining a healthy weight helps relieve pressure on the bladder and lessen frequency.
Medications- Medications can help relax bladder muscles and reduce the urgency and frequency of urine by blocking nerve signals.
Botox Injection- Botulinum toxin may be injected in the wall of the urinary bladder cystoscopically in patients not responding to medication.
Bladder Augmentation Surgery- Enlarging the bladder is a surgical treatment that increases bladder capacity and reduces the urgency and frequency of urinating.
