Umar Abubakar, spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), made this announcement at a press briefing in Abuja. He stated:

Over 1,000 inmates pursuing university degrees

“The Federal Government has actually reviewed the feeding allowance of inmates in our custody with 50 per cent. And this is just the first phase of the review.”

Abubakar also addressed a recent viral video showcasing inadequate feeding at a Calabar correctional centre, stating that it does not represent the service’s mandate on reformation and rehabilitation.

He highlighted the NCoS’s progress in reforming inmates, including:

– Over 1,000 inmates pursuing university degrees
– 282 inmates studying for diplomas and master’s degrees
– Six inmates pursuing PhDs, with three already writing their theses

The increased feeding allowance is part of the government’s efforts to provide a conducive environment for inmates’ reformation and rehabilitation, ultimately ensuring public safety.
