Controller General of Corrections, Hailey Nababa, issued the warning in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.
The agency warned that tampering with or attacking these centers would lead to a breakdown of law and order and exacerbate societal security.
“In view of the national protest scheduled for August 1, 2024, the Controller General informs the public that Custodial Centres are red zones; any unauthorized persons should steer clear,” the statement, signed by spokesman Abubakar Umar, read.
To prevent this, security measures have been heightened at custodial centres nationwide, with the Ministry of Interior Joint Taskforce (MOIJTF) activated to provide extra security.
Similarly, the Nigeria Customs Services (NCS) has directed heightened vigilance and surveillance at the country’s borders, while other security agencies, including the Nigerian Army and police, have cautioned against violence during the planned protest.
