After the removal, there was a hike in fuel prices, an increase in food prices, food and fuel shortages, among other issues.

During an interview with the Financial Times, Obasanjo questioned the way President Tinubu removed the subsidies and the impact on the Nigerian people.

He noted that the government should have implemented measures before removing the subsidies.

However, Obasanjo believes that fuel subsidies have returned due to the inflation rate.

Obasanjo said, “There’s a lot of work that needs to be done. Not just wake up one morning and say you removed the subsidy. Because of inflation, the subsidy that we have removed is not gone. It has come back.”
