The video showed the man and some others struggling for their lives as they waited and hoped for a lifeline.

In the recording, he said in pidgin: “ewoo, I don die” to mean “I am dead.” The location, date, and time are unknown at the time of filing this report.

The caption accompanying the video suggests it was captured around Morocco’s Spanish enclave of Ceuta from the Moroccan territories or the Mediterranean Sea.

The video has drawn reactions from Nigerians on social media as well as some in the political class. Isaac Fayose, brother of former Ekiti State governor, Ayo Fayose simply wrote, “See Morocco, see Spain Japa wahala” while Reno Omokri, a PDP Chieftain wrote on Facebook, “Fellow black Africans stranded in the Mediterranean Sea, trying to reach Europe. Who can help save these lives?”

Hundreds of lives have been lost on the Mediterranean Sea as African migrants attempt to cross from Northern Africa to Spain or Italy.

According to the online news portal, thenewhumanitarian.org, more than 5,000 people died in the first five months of this year trying to reach Spain by sea, 95% of them on Atlantic Ocean crossings from West and Northwest Africa to the Canary Islands, a new report on the world’s deadliest migration route reveals.

Mauritania has overtaken Senegal as the main departure point, representing 3,600 of the deaths between January and April, according to the report from Ca-minando Fronteras (Walking Borders), a collective dedicated to protecting migrant communities.

Arrivals in the Canary Islands have been rising for years, but the latest figures represent an increase in fatalities of almost 700% in the first five months of 2024 over the same period in 2023.
