Operatives of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on Thursday reportedly stormed the IHS Towers office in Wuse 2, Abuja, causing panic as they allegedly threatened to open fire.
According to reports by eyewitnesses, the operatives seized more than 40 mobile phones, laptops, and smartwatches from staff during the operation.
The incident occurred in the middle of a World Human Rights Day presentation being conducted by Amnesty International representatives for IHS staff.
Sources at the scene said ICPC officials barred all movement in and out of the building, effectively holding Amnesty International staff and other employees “hostage.”
Two Amnesty International personnel were said to still be trapped inside the premises at the time of filing this report.
“The ICPC personnel confiscated over 40 mobile phones, laptops and smartwatches,” one source said.
“Amnesty International staff members making a presentation to commemorate World Human Rights Day are still held hostage in the office.
“ICPC operatives are threatening to shoot anyone who tries to go out or get into the building,” the source added.
Another witness described the situation as tense, noting that officers disrupted the event and repeatedly warned participants against leaving the conference room.
IHS Towers began operations in Nigeria in 2001 and has since expanded into telecoms infrastructure development and management.
