In an interview with the Financial Times, Elumelu revealed that despite securing substantial funding, his company’s proposal to acquire the oilfield was blocked by former president Muhammadu Buhari and his Chief of Staff Abba Kyari.
Elumelu expressed his concern over oil theft, noting that this issue has driven international oil companies to divest from Nigeria. He highlighted his personal experience with the theft of crude oil from his company’s pipelines as a key factor in the divestment.
