These individuals were caught red-handed hawking petrol to motorists at Exorbitant rates, exacerbating the already intense situation faced by many people residing in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital.
The Chairman of the Agency, CSP Adetayo Akerele who led the operations disclosed that the current fuel scarcity is no excuse for miscreants to exploit Lagosians by purchasing large quantities of petrol in gallons and kegs, only to resell them on the streets at inflated prices.
CSP Akerele stated that this unscrupulous practice not only burdens struggling motorists but also poses significant safety risks due to the highly inflammable nature of petroleum products. The arrestees will be charged in court and the petroleum products seized will be forfeited to the State Government through the Court.
“We are committed to curbing these illegal activities and ensuring that public safety is not compromised. The actions of these black-market operators are a severe threat as improper handling and storage of petrol could lead to catastrophic fire disasters,” said CSP Akerele.
He urged members of the public to report any suspicious activities related to illegal storage and sales of petroleum products. Additionally, he warned those involved in such practices that they would face severe consequences under the law.
The taskforce also sounded warned that anyone who connives with petrol stations for illicit sales saying they must desist or risk being arrested. It’s important for every member involved in such practices as they may lead up against full-force legalities if caught exploiting fellow citizens during this tough time.
