A woman is said to have lost both her hands in a savage shark attack

One tourist received more than she bargained for after she supposedly got into the ocean to pose for a photo alongside a shark – only for it to lash out and take both her hands off in one clean bite.

The women, currently unnamed but thought to be from Canada, was enjoying the sun at a beach on Turks and Caicos island. She saw a great opportunity for a photo alongside a shark swimming near the shore, but it completely backfired. The attack took place last Friday, and she was just a few metres from the shore when the predator struck, according to local media.

Aged 55, the woman supposedly tried to “engage” with the beast and take a photo, before it made its strike. Her family, stood on the shore, were said to have witnessed the attack before her husband jumped in and tried to prevent the shark from attacking again.

Photos from the scene show a woman laying on the sandy shoreline, surrounded by beach goers. They all held cloths to her arms to try and stop the excessive bleeding.

While official details have not yet been shared, the shark was estimated to be around 6ft in length, the local government said. The breed is not yet known, but unconfirmed reports online have suggested it was a bull shark, which are common to the island’s shores.

“I was there for 40 minutes and it was still lingering,” one witness told a local news site following the incident. Royal Turks and Caicos Police said that medical personnel and cops were dispatched to the scene near the neighbourhood of Blue Hills, Providenciales.

They added that the victim was brought ashore and rushed to the Cheshire Hall Medical Centre for treatment. Reports say she had one of her hands amputated at the wrist and the other mid-way down her forearm, and is now said to be receiving medical care back in Canada.

A man at the scene said she was able to walk back to shore after being bitten. She was bitten in the thigh, he added, but did not lose her leg.
