This action follows failed attempts by security operatives to address the situation. Men and women alike marched into the forests to rescue approximately 150 kidnapped victims and retrieve the remains of the slain district head of Gobir, Isa Mohammed Bawa.

On August 21, 2024, the Sarkin Gobir of Gatawa District in Sokoto State, Alhaji Isa Muhammad Bawa, was brutally murdered by bandits after being abducted and tortured.

Days after the tragic news of the traditional ruler’s death, bandits attacked Gobir town and abducted over 150 mourners, according to Prof. Bello Bada of Usman Dan Fodio University Sokoto.

The Nigerian police have denied the claim of 150 residents being kidnapped. “We are not aware of the kidnapping of 150 people in the Gobir Emirate of Sokoto State,” stated the spokesperson for the Sokoto State Police Command, ASP Ahmed Rufai.

In a display of frustration over the ongoing abductions, thousands of Gobir residents were captured in a viral video marching into the forest while chanting war songs, and invoking the name of Allah.

The residents chanted, “It’s a fight to the finish! Its either us or them (bandits), no going back,” as they marched to the forests.
