His comment comes after the President called for an end to the nationwide protests over the high cost of living, bad governance and economic hardship facing Nigerians.

Hanke, known as a fierce critic of President Tinubu’s administration, took to his X page (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, August 8, 2024, to share his thoughts.

President Tinubu, during his address to the nation on Sunday, August 4, 2024, expressed disappointment at the loss of lives in some states and the looting of stores during the protests. He noted that the destruction of properties set the nation back and that scarce resources would be used again to restore them.

He said, “I am especially pained by the loss of lives in Borno, Jigawa, Kano, Kaduna, and other states, the destruction of public facilities in some states, and the wanton looting of supermarkets and shops, contrary to the promise of protest organisers that the protest would be peaceful across the country.”

The President called on the protesters and organisers to end the protests and engage in a dialogue with the government.

“I hereby enjoin protesters and organisers to suspend any further protest and create room for dialogue, which I have always acceded to at the slightest opportunity,” he said.

Protesters, however, continued to take to the streets in some states to demand better governance, an end to insecurity, a solution to the hike in fuel prices, inflation, and a decrease in the price of food.

Steve Hanke shared a cartoon on his social media page of President Bola Tinubu being chased by Nigerian protesters.

He captioned it, “Pres. Tinubu calls for an end to protests over the cost-of-living crisis that he himself spurred, claiming “our government is committed to listening and addressing the concerns of our citizens.” It’s time for Tinubu to take the exit door.”
