The Red Devils scored a late goal in the 82nd minute through Alejandro Garnacho.
However, substitute Bernardo Silva headed in the equalizer seven minutes later to force the game to a penalty shoot-out, where City won 7-6.
“Tough result to take. When the performance is right, when you lose everyone feels this. It hurts in your stomach,” Ten Hag said.
“You have to feel pain and we have to hurt. We have to take this belief into the league.
“We did very good to produce the second goal in the FA Cup final before half-time and weren’t able to do that here.”
