Court Takes New Action in Obasa’s Suit Against Removal as Speaker

The Lagos State High Court in Ikeja has adjourned the hearing of a suit filed by reinstated Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa to March 17, 2025.

Obasa was removed from office on January 13, 2025, by lawmakers over allegations of fraud, abuse of office, and misconduct.

The suit lists members of the Lagos Assembly and former Speaker Mojisola Meranda as respondents.

During Monday’s proceedings, counsel for the House of Assembly, Femi Falana (SAN), requested an adjournment, citing newly filed affidavits from Obasa’s legal team. Similarly, Meranda’s counsel, Tayo Oyetibo (SAN), asked for more time to respond to serious fraud allegations raised in the fresh documents.

Justice Yetunde Pinheiro ruled that all pending applications, including those concerning injunctions and jurisdiction, would be heard together on March 17. She also instructed all parties to file and exchange their legal documents before the next hearing.

Obasa’s decision to continue with the lawsuit suggests ongoing tensions within the Assembly.
