According to People’s Gazette, on Wednesday night, August 14, 2024, gtbank.com was no longer accessible.
It was gathered that the attack came a day after the domain name was renewed for another five years, from August 13, 2024, through March 21, 2029.
Since the domain went down, no group of hackers has claimed responsibility. Claims suggest that the attackers seemed to have created another HTTP layer of the website in an apparent ploy to steal customers data through phishing.
Analysis from a cybersecurity expert stated that there is a possibility that the bank’s login details were compromised, rather than the domain address itself being stolen for resale at a more lucrative deal online, as People’s Gazette quoted.
As a result, some GTBank customers have begun to lament their frustrations on social media due to their inability to access their accounts online or make any transactions.
Bank representatives have called on customers to be patient and send their requests to a designated channel.
It has been revealed that the bank’s mobile setup was not affected, as Android and iOS-based applications were still in operation.
