The Senator representing Delta North Senatorial District, Ned Nwoko has urged Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to ensure that his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) is not only symbolic but transformative.
Nwoko, in a statement issued on Friday in reaction to the defection of Oborevwori, Ifeanyi Okowa and other key members of the PDP to APC said, it is important that the new ruling party entrants dump all the old political gimmicks that contributed to the decline of the opposition party.
While commending the governor and other key members of the PDP who have just joined the APC for their courage, Nwoko said their defection should bring a desired change to the party and the people of Delta State.
“It now behoves you to rise to this historic moment. The past must not be carried into the future. As scripture warns, ‘No one pours new wine into old wineskins. Old habits, old politics, and the old deals that led to the gradual decline of the PDP in Delta must be left behind.
“Your defection must not be symbolic; it must be transformative. This is your opportunity to embrace a new sense of purpose and demonstrate renewed dedication to progressive governance, fairness, and inclusive development. It is time to right the wrongs of the past,” Nwoko said.
Reeling out some of his expectations from the defectors, especially the Governor of Delta State, Nwoko said now is the time for the defectors to lend their voices to the aspiration of the Delta people.
He also called for changes that are not just political but of high economic necessities and people-oriented by bringing government closer to the people.
He also advocated for their voices towards the proposed creation of Anioma State from the existing Delta State to give institutional power to the people.
“These changes are more than political. They are economic necessities. They are about focused governance, better infrastructure, increased federal allocation, and grassroots democracy. Two new states will mean two new engines of development,” Nwoko added.
