EPL: ‘Huge mistake’ – Rio Ferdinand slams Man United over Victor Osimhen

Former Manchester United defender, Rio Ferdinand, has reminded the club the two bad transfer decisions they made in recent times as their bad run of play continues with a 1-1 draw against Leeds United over the weekend.

Manager, Ruben Amorim hailed Matheus Cunha after his goal leveled the game following Brenden Aaronson’s first goal at Elland Road.

United have now won only one of their last seven matches, moving three points away from the Champions League spots and falling 17 points behind the Premier League leaders, Arsenal.

Benjamin Sesko, who joined the club for £74 million in the summer, played the whole game but could not make an impact.

It is his 11th match now without a goal, bringing his total goals for the Red Devils to just two in 17 games.

Ferdinand thinks Manchester United should have signed Victor Osimhen last summer instead.

United was one of several clubs that wanted Osimhen, but they stopped their attempt to sign the Nigeria international before he moved to Galatasaray for £65 million.

Osimhen has already scored 12 goals in 16 matches this season and Ferdinand said it was a mistake not bringing Osimhen to Old Trafford.

He also pointed out that Danny Welbeck’s transfer leaving Old Trafford was another error made by his old club.

Manchester United sold Chris Welbeck to Arsenal in 2019, and now at 35, he’s having one of his best times playing for Brighton, scoring eight goals this season so far.

Ferdinand said on his YouTube channel after United drew with Leeds, “I’ve said before they should never have sold Danny Welbeck.

“I couldn’t believe we let him go. Now we’re seeing why I was so sure about that because he’s doing his own thing at Brighton.

“He’s scoring goals and you can count on him as a reliable player. But that ship has already left, it’s gone now. He’s too old, but we shouldn’t have let him go in the first place.

“I still think we should have signed Victor Osimhen. I don’t want to keep talking about it, but we really should have signed him because there were no doubts or questions about it.

“It’s just pure experience with him. We aren’t passing the ball to Sesko enough, and that’s a major issue. He’s still developing and I believe he needs to handle the ball more.”

Amorim will want Manchester United to start winning again on Wednesday night when they play against Burnley at Turf Moor.
