FG announces new date for reopening of Enugu airport

Barely one week after its closure, the Federal Government has announced plans to reopen the Akanu Ibiam International Airport.

Recall that the airport was closed by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) for an emergency rehabilitation of the runway.

According to FAAN, the closure of the Airport was a result of a sudden rupture which appeared on the asphalt surface at a major part of the runway.

Stating that continuous usage of the runway without repairs was risky, the authority promised that the process would take place between April 22 and May 6.

However, a statement from Obiageli Orah, FAAN director of public affairs and consumer protection said the airport will be reopened on Monday, April 28 – almost a week earlier than the earlier proposed date.

Orah noted that the new date follows a speedy rehabilitation process which has already been completed on the runway.

She said, “The work was scheduled to begin on April 22nd and conclude before reopening on May 6th, 2025.

“FAAN appreciates all airport users and stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation during this time.”

On behalf of FAAN, Orah apologised and appreciated the public’s patience throughout this period.
