The Counter Subversion Bill of 2024 that sought to penalize citizens who refuse to sing the new and controversial anthem, ‘Nigeria, We Hail Thee’ sparked outrage when it emerged on Wednesday, August 14.

The Bill which is sponsored by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas will hand a fine of N5 million or serve a 10-year jail term for Nigerians found guilty of destroying national symbols (including the flag) as a means to undermine the government.

It has since been rejected by individuals loyal to the opposition party including Mses Ezekwesili and Yesufu and controversial social commentator, Aisha Yesufu.

While the conversation makes waves on social and traditional media, an old video of Yesufu publicly refusing to stand while the adopted ‘Nigeria We Hail Thee’ has surfaced.

In the video that went viral on Friday, May 31, the activist who was in an event, chose to sit while others were standing during the recitation of the new anthem.

Most guests at the event were astonished by Aisha’s display.

While sharing a video clip that captured the moment on her official X handle, Aisha wrote, “Not my anthem”.
