Obasanjo has been a vocal critic of President Bola Tinubu’s government since he took office. The reason for Obasanjo’s absence at the meeting remains unknown.
President Bola Tinubu chaired his first Council of State meeting, attended by former Presidents Muhammadu Buhari and Goodluck Jonathan, with Yakubu Gowon and Abdulsalami Abubakar participating virtually.
The Council advises the President on major policy decisions and national issues, and includes the Vice President, Senate President, and other top officials.
The meeting took place after ten days of nationwide protests against economic hardship due to the removal of fuel subsidies.
A statement issued on the Council of State meeting stated, “President Bola Tinubu Summons Council of State Gowon, IBB, Abdusalami, Obasanjo, Jonathan, Buhari, and others for a meeting today.
“The Council of State consists of the following persons: the President, who is the Chairman; Vice-President, who is the Deputy Chairman; all former Presidents of the Federation and all former Heads of the Government of the Federation.
“All former Chief Justices of Nigeria; President of the Senate; Speaker of the House of Representatives; all the Governors of the states of the Federation; the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation.”
