Go Protest, Will Support You With Sachet Water, Sweet — Edo Police Commissioner Assures Protesters

The Edo State Police Commissioner, CP Funsho Adegboye on Wednesday pledged to uphold the right of protesters to peaceful assembly while providing a safe space to express their grievances.

Adegboye during a press briefing with a journalist assured the protesters of no barricades, saying, “we are going to protect them but there will be no blocking of roads or violence.”

He added, “Police will protect and support them with sachet water and sweets. We have agreed that they will only occupy the King’s Square, which is the venue of the protest,” he said.

The State’s CP further assured that residents who didn’t want to participate in the protest would be allowed to go about their normal businesses.

Recall that the Nigeria Police Force had agreed to safeguard protesters nationwide on the condition that participants be confined to designated areas.

Although the proposal was greeted with resistance from the protest organisers, the police leadership insisted that such resistance was pertinent to adequately safeguard the protesters and forestall the hijacking of the procession.

The Edo State Police Command has promised to support and protect protesters provided it is carried out peacefully in the state.

Briefing journalists on Wednesday evening, the State Commissioner of Police, CP Funsho Adegboye, said it is the right of the citizens to protest.

“We had a meeting with some leaders of the protest, we have agreed that it must be peaceful, we are going to protect them but there will be no blocking of roads or violence”

According to him, residents who don’t want to participate in the protest would be allowed to go about their normal businesses..

“Police will protect and support them with sachet water and sweets. We have agreed that they will only occupy the Kings square which is the venue of the protest,” he said.
