Gombe govt begins probe as trailer kills 5 worshippers during Easter procession

The government of Gombe State has launched an investigation into the incident that led to the killing of five worshipers during a procession along the Gombe–Yola Federal Highway.

The Governor of the State, Inuwa Yahaya ordered a full-scale investigation into the incident where a trailer transporting goods rammed into the worshipers on the highway in the Billiri Local Government Area of the state.

It was gathered that several residents angered by the incident set the trailer ablaze while also demanding the release of the driver of the vehicle from police custody.

With the chaos in the area, hoodlums took to looting shops and wares of petty traders in the community.

Several other worshippers were also injured from the accident and are currently receiving medical treatment.

In a statement, the Gombe State Governor expressed his sympathy to the victims’ families and the Christians in the state.

He also assured that the state government would ensure justice is delivered to all those affected.

Describing the incident as regrettable, Yahaya said his administration is committed to ensuring that those injured get the best medical care.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Christian community in Billiri and beyond, as well as with all those affected by this tragedy.

“As a government, we are committed to ensuring that the victims receive the best possible medical care. We will come out of this tragedy more united,” Yahaya said.
