Her comment follows reports that the House of Representatives has introduced the Counter Subversion Bill 2024, which aims to impose strict penalties on Nigerians who refuse to recite the national anthem.
Under the proposed legislation, citizens found guilty of not reciting the national anthem may be fined N5 million, face a 10-year prison sentence, or both.
The bill, sponsored by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, is awaiting a second reading. It also suggests a 25-year prison sentence or a N10 million fine, or both, for anyone convicted of making statements or taking actions that incite separatist agitation or inter-group or sectional conflict in the country.
Yesufu posted on X: “I would choose 20 years in prison over singing Tinubu’s anthem, which was passed by lawmakers who she referred to as slaves in the National Assembly.”
It is worth noting that in a viral video, the activist chose to sit while others stood during the recitation of the new anthem.
Yesufu later shared a video clip of the moment on her official X handle, where she wrote: “Not my anthem.”
