The suspect, believed to be in his early 20s, was intercepted on Friday evening by community members in Ilorin, the state capital, after he allegedly attempted to lure a child away.

He was reportedly being beaten by the mob when a police patrol team arrived and whisked him away to safety.

In a video recorded at the scene and now circulating online, the suspect admitted during a brief on-the-spot interrogation that child abduction had become a routine operation for his group.

“I don’t know the number again… We’ve done it many times.

“Our oga (leader) dey Dagbolu for Osogbo side. Na him dey send us money. E don give me N10 million before,” he said in Pidgin English, visibly in pain from injuries sustained in the scuffle.

The suspect claimed his syndicate operates across multiple states, with Ilorin serving as a key base for sourcing children.

He also named a few other alleged collaborators, stating that they often moved the children out of Kwara within hours of abduction to avoid detection.

Confirming the arrest, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the Kwara State Command, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, said the suspect is in custody and undergoing intense interrogation.

“He was apprehended during a routine patrol conducted by a joint team of police officers and vigilante members. He was rescued from mob action and immediately taken in for questioning,” Adetoun said in a statement issued Saturday.

The police spokesperson stressed that while the allegations are grave, residents must resist the temptation to take the law into their own hands.

“We strongly advise against jungle justice. It obstructs the legal process and can lead to fatal mistakes. All suspicious activity should be reported to law enforcement promptly,” she said.

SP Ejire-Adeyemi further disclosed that although the suspect claimed to be part of a larger network operating out of Osun State, investigators are still working to verify those claims.

According to her, so far, no formal complainant has stepped forward to aid the probe.

“The Command is actively following leads to uncover the full extent of the alleged network. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses,” she added.
